Art was a matter of destiny for the Brazilian illustrator Rubens Lopes Pires Júnior, who is better known as Rubens LP. “I had no other way to go, there was nothing else I could choose,” he tells Heavy Metal in #285 . “I was born into a family of art lovers. I’ve always been surrounded by it and I’ve always been stimulated by it. It’s just my nature at this point. I cannot see myself doing something different than art.”

As for the subject matter, he jokingly admits he is a “pervert” (hey, aren’t we all…), then says a little more seriously: “The female body is naturally beautiful, so I do not have to work hard to create delicate and sensual shapes. Another reason is that I spend a lot of my time working. Nothing better than spending that time with beautiful bodies.”

Rubens LP Bio:

I am a freelance illustrator from São Paulo, Brazil, where I was born in 1981. Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by lines, colors, the smell of tint, challenges and communication. Art became my way of expressing myself and connecting my passions.

I have also been a tech enthusiast all my life. Digital art came naturally to me as I had limited space for canvas but plenty of room for a computer at home.

I created my first website with visual experiments, FluxusCentral, in 1998 while studying Industrial Design at the Mackenzie University of São Paulo.

That same year, I started working as a designer, art director and illustrator for various web companies, advertising agencies, press and architecture offices.

Since 2005, I have been working as a freelance illustrator for many clients in different sectors and displaying my work in galleries around the world.

Some of my hobbies are reading books, playing video games, chatting with friends, exploring spirituality, travelling, surfing the web, listening to music, learning history, enjoying popular culture and walking in nature.
