In Stores Now: Issue 287, the Music Special! 11-Page Preview

AUG. 18TH 2017 -It’s always been a dichotomy, right? A graphic storytelling (er, “comics”) magazine called Heavy Metal, focusing on science fiction and fantasy, that rose to prominence while, along a parallel path, a musical genre called “heavy metal” got really, really fucking popular. And before we get into the debate of what is “really” Heavy Metal, whether it’s music or illustration, let’s call a few celebrity witnesses.

Now approaching the stand: Chromium, Cobalt, Copper, Iron, Lead, etc.

Those are the original heavy metals, and have been called by that name for at least 200 years. And to those who have, occasionally, questioned whether Heavy Metal magazine should be called such because it is not explicitly about the genre of music known as heavy metal, let us say this: We are about heaviness, and we are about metal, and if that aligns us with heavy metal, the music, then so be it.

“So be it”—let us not forget that there was a little movie called Heavy Metal way back when and its soundtrack was, in its day, pretty damn metal.

And now, for the second time in our magazine’s history, we can push further—we’re cranking this sucker well past 11, truth be told. SO BE IT? THEN SO IT SHALL BE! In this current issue, #287 (available in the Heavy Metal online store, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million and your local comics shop), we embrace as never before the connection between heavy metal music and Heavy Metal magazine. This seems like a good time to pause and let you have an eyeful of this issue’s covers:

The two things you always knew in your heart should be together—are now together. Heavy Metal (the magazine, in fact the World’s Greatest Illustrated Magazine) is filled with stories inspired by the greatest songs of heavy metal (the genre). When your list of contributors includes Ozzy Osbourne, Trent Reznor, Rob Zombie, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue—well, you must be on to some special shit. And for Satan’s sake (hail Satan!), we are. Just take a look at what’s in this issue: Songs, by heavy metal (music) artists, turned into graphic stories in collaboration with Heavy Metal (magazine) writers and artists. You’ll see all the credits on the captions below. Horns up!
